Party crasher
Brynn parted the black curtains draped over the large bay window inside of Theoâs living room, staring out at the squad car parked along the edge of the gravel driveway. Her turning stomach settled as her eyes scanned the crowded driveway, eying the thick woods surrounding the country home. Thank God for the twenty-four-hour supervision. At least help was right outside if the killer showed.
âHeâs not going anywhere, Brynn,â a deep voice whispered into her ear, lingering over the loud beat of the pop song blaring from the stereo in the corner. Brynn turned, staring back at Gabe as he glanced around the crowded living room, every inch covered with their peers, dancing and chatting away like there wasnât a sick, psychotic killer on the loose.
âI know, I just wanted to be sure,â Brynn said. âWhereâs Theo?â
âSheâs in the kitchen playing hostess. Sheâs fine, trust me.â
âIâve got a really bad feeling about this, Gabe. I think we should call it off. This isnât right. We canât do this,â Brynn said as her voice trembled over the loud bass.
âItâs a little late for that, isnât it?â
âI canât just sit here and watch more people die,â Brynn snarled.
âThatâs exactly whatâs going to happen if we call this off. This is probably our only chance to catch this guy. Donât you want to end this?â
âNot at the expense of peopleâs lives, Gabe,â Brynn sighed as her eyes scanned the crowded living room.
âBrynn, youâre here!â a high-pitched voice rang out, stabbing into Brynnâs ears as she rolled her eyes. Brynn turned, staring back at Cassie Mullins and Andy Ellis, both of them, staggering and fumbling over their words. âI didnât think youâd come after what happened!â Cassie smiled as she shuffled forward, almost tackling Brynn as she wrapped her arms around her. Brynn nearly gagged as the smell of vodka spewed from Cassieâs full lips.
âGabe? Gabe Barker?â Andy smiled, his red, puffy eyes staring back at Gabe as he nodded. âNever seen you at a party, man! Thought you spent your nights at home tickling Dougieâs pickle,â Andy cackled, sticking out his tongue.
âI am so, so sorry about Carter, Brynn,â Cassie said, pouting out her bottom lip as she released Brynn, clearing her brown hair from her face. âHe was so hot.â
âGod, that really came from the heart, didnât it, Cassie,â Brynn rolled her eyes.
âMore like from the bottom of the bottle,â Gabe whispered into Brynnâs ear as she cracked a smile.
âWeâre going to go get another drank!â Cassie winked. âYou two cool dudes want some?â Cassie slurred.
âNo, weâre good. Sounds like you are, too,â Gabe yelled over the music.
âWeâll talk to you guys later! Have a good time Brynn andâ¦whatever your name is,â Cassie smiled as she draped her arm onto Andyâs muscular shoulders, the both of them pushing through the crowd and towards the kitchen.
âIâm shocked she even knew her own name,â Gabe said.
âSheâll be pregnant by graduation,â Brynn smiled as Theo pushed through the crowd, rushing towards her.
âAre you ready?â Theo asked.
