Party crasher

Brynn parted the black curtains draped over the large bay window inside of Theo’s living room, staring out at the squad car parked along the edge of the gravel driveway. Her turning stomach settled as her eyes scanned the crowded driveway, eying the thick woods surrounding the country home. Thank God for the twenty-four-hour supervision. At least help was right outside if the killer showed.

“He’s not going anywhere, Brynn,” a deep voice whispered into her ear, lingering over the loud beat of the pop song blaring from the stereo in the corner. Brynn turned, staring back at Gabe as he glanced around the crowded living room, every inch covered with their peers, dancing and chatting away like there wasn’t a sick, psychotic killer on the loose.

“I know, I just wanted to be sure,” Brynn said. “Where’s Theo?”

“She’s in the kitchen playing hostess. She’s fine, trust me.”

“I’ve got a really bad feeling about this, Gabe. I think we should call it off. This isn’t right. We can’t do this,” Brynn said as her voice trembled over the loud bass.

“It’s a little late for that, isn’t it?”

“I can’t just sit here and watch more people die,” Brynn snarled.

“That’s exactly what’s going to happen if we call this off. This is probably our only chance to catch this guy. Don’t you want to end this?”

“Not at the expense of people’s lives, Gabe,” Brynn sighed as her eyes scanned the crowded living room.

“Brynn, you’re here!” a high-pitched voice rang out, stabbing into Brynn’s ears as she rolled her eyes. Brynn turned, staring back at Cassie Mullins and Andy Ellis, both of them, staggering and fumbling over their words. “I didn’t think you’d come after what happened!” Cassie smiled as she shuffled forward, almost tackling Brynn as she wrapped her arms around her. Brynn nearly gagged as the smell of vodka spewed from Cassie’s full lips.

“Gabe? Gabe Barker?” Andy smiled, his red, puffy eyes staring back at Gabe as he nodded. “Never seen you at a party, man! Thought you spent your nights at home tickling Dougie’s pickle,” Andy cackled, sticking out his tongue.

“I am so, so sorry about Carter, Brynn,” Cassie said, pouting out her bottom lip as she released Brynn, clearing her brown hair from her face. “He was so hot.”

“God, that really came from the heart, didn’t it, Cassie,” Brynn rolled her eyes.

“More like from the bottom of the bottle,” Gabe whispered into Brynn’s ear as she cracked a smile.

“We’re going to go get another drank!” Cassie winked. “You two cool dudes want some?” Cassie slurred.

“No, we’re good. Sounds like you are, too,” Gabe yelled over the music.

“We’ll talk to you guys later! Have a good time Brynn and…whatever your name is,” Cassie smiled as she draped her arm onto Andy’s muscular shoulders, the both of them pushing through the crowd and towards the kitchen.

“I’m shocked she even knew her own name,” Gabe said.

“She’ll be pregnant by graduation,” Brynn smiled as Theo pushed through the crowd, rushing towards her.

“Are you ready?” Theo asked.
